After spending the winter in the Philippines—where it's summer all year round, whether rainy or dry—we returned to Virginia just as spring was unfolding. We were welcomed by the first brave flowers peeking through the soil, reminding us of the season’s promise: new beginnings, fresh opportunities, and the hope of a bright future.
In many ways, we felt that same spirit of renewal during our February visit to the Baruyan Elementary School (BES).
There, we witnessed firsthand the fruits of the programs we helped initiate and support. The impact has been deeply encouraging:
Feeding programs have helped reduce absenteeism.
Athletic programs in volleyball and basketball have brought home medals from regional inter-school competitions.
Art programs, both visual and performance, have nurtured young talents who are now winning local contests in writing and visual arts.
These results have energized the entire school community—teachers, administrators, and staff alike.
During a short program and reception, we introduced something new this year: recognition and monetary awards for outstanding student participants in the after-school programs. Continuing a meaningful tradition, we also presented the Lito Cantos Outstanding Teacher Award, including a laptop, to an educator who exemplifies exceptional commitment and passion for teaching.
We were delighted to meet Kirby, a 4th grader who had never held a paintbrush before joining our art program. With encouragement and guidance, Kirby discovered a deep love for painting. His teacher nominated him for a city-wide school painting competition, where participants are given only five basic colors and must complete a painting en plein air within a few hours, based on a subject provided by the judges.
Kirby not only won the city-level competition—he went on to win at the regional level (across several provinces) and is now preparing to compete nationally next month. We even invited him to practice in our farmhouse garden. Watching him paint there, it’s hard not to see the beginnings of a young Michelangelo.
Kirby’s story is just one, but we believe there are many more like him—students who, given access and opportunity, will uncover their unique talents, whether in art, sports, or writing. His discovery marks the start of a new journey, a new future—and he’s become our symbol of what’s possible when potential is unlocked.
This is what inspires and sustains our work with UNLAD. Like a ripple in the ocean, a single child’s discovery of their gift can set off a chain reaction—building confidence, excellence, and a path to a better future.
Thank you for your ongoing support and encouragement.
May this spring and this week’s Easter holidays bring you its own promise of renewal, and many beautiful new beginnings.
